What is Bioenergetics?
“Bioenergetics is a way of understanding personality in terms of the body and its energetic processes. These processes, namely, the production of energy through respiration and metabolism and the discharge of energy in movement, are the basic functions of life. How much energy one has and how one uses his energy determine how one responds to life situations. Obviously, one can cope more effectively if one has more energy, which can be freely translated into movement and expression.

Alexander Lowen, "The Energy of Bioenergetics"

Bioenergetics is also a form of therapy that combines work with the body and mind to help people resolve their emotional problems and realize more of their potential for pleasure and joy in living. A fundamental thesis of bioenergetics is that body and mind are functionally identical: that is, what goes on in the mind reflects what is happening in the body and vice versa. The relationship between these three elements, body, mind, and energetic processes, is best expressed by a dialectical formulation.

As we all know, mind and body can influence each other. What one thinks can affect how one feels. The converse is equally true. This interaction, however, is limited to the conscious or superficial aspects of the personality. On a deeper level, that is, on the unconscious level, both thinking and feeling are conditioned by energy factors. For example, it is almost impossible for a depressed person to lift himself out of his depression by thinking positive thoughts. This is because his energy level is depressed. When his energy level is raised through deep breathing (his breathing was depressed along with all other vital functions) and the release of feeling, the person comes out of the depressed state.

The energetic processes of the body are related to the state of aliveness of the body. The more alive one is, the more energy one has and vice versa. Rigidity or chronic tension diminishes one’s aliveness and decreases one’s energy. At birth, an organism is in its most alive, most fluid state; at death, rigidity is total, rigor mortis. We cannot avoid the rigidity that comes with age. What we can avoid is the rigidity due to chronic muscular tensions resulting from unresolved emotional conflicts.

Every stress produces a state of tension in the body. Normally the tension disappears when the stress is relieved. Chronic tensions, however, persist after the provoking stress has been removed as an unconscious bodily attitude or muscular set. Such chronic muscular tensions disturb emotional health by decreasing an individual’s energy, restricting his motility (the natural spontaneous play and movement of the musculature), and limiting his self-expression. It becomes necessary then to relieve this chronic tension if the person is to regain his full aliveness and emotional well-being.”

I posted the evaluation sheet on Blackboard.

Before reading this article, I always hesitated on whether or not it was okay for a rape victim to have an abortion. I am currently Pro-Life, but I felt I was being hypocritical because I did not fully believe that it was unjust for rape victims to have an abortion. In order for someone to say that they are Pro-Life, they should not approve of abortion no matter what the situation may be: rape, incest, and/ or teen pregnancy. I figured this out for myself once I read this article. In class, my group decided to state reasons and arguments, after research, why abortions in any situation are wrong. I decided to focus on rape because this was the situation that I was not exactly sure about. Now that I learned more about this, I feel confident in stating that I am completely against abortion in every situation and here is why.

Rape is a horrible experience for a woman to go through, especially when they become conceived of a child by a complete stranger whom took advantage of them. After all, who would want to raise a child that was conceived in this type of tragic situation? Many people have prejudices against someone whom is Pro-Life because they feel pity towards the rape victim: the mother in this case. However, assumptions are made that mothers want to abort their babies if they have been raped because it will help the mother recover from the rape incident. At often times, the opinions of the mothers are not stated as to whether or not they want to abort the child. In fact a study was done that supported this idea, “In the only major study of pregnant rape victims ever done, Dr. Sandra Mahkorn found that 75 to 85 percent chose against abortion” (Mahkorn, 55). This study proves that most people’s assumptions that sexual assault victims would rather keep their children and that abortion is not the immediate cure for the victims experience.
How can someone believe that rape victims will be relieved of their pain if they abort their own babies? It is argued that when rape victims conceive a child that was not desired, they are doing a good act. I support this idea because a sensation of self-worth can cure a woman’s feeling of no worth at all after being raped. It can boost the confidence of a victim if they feel happy about giving birth to an undesired baby. They are, in fact, saving a life instead of killing one. The victim may feel this sense of self worth because it is a generous act of kindness to nurture a baby that was conceived by accident.

It is assumed that rape victims will be able to put the incident behind them if they do not have to raise a child that was conceived during this tragic happening. However, an abortion is another tragic situation that the mother must live with for the rest of her life. Many people do not consider this because they do not think about the mother’s feelings. They only pay attention to the fact that the mother will not have to raise the baby: worry about financial or living situations, and can just move on with their lives. One study finds that, “Many women report that their abortions felt like a degrading and brutal form of medical rape” (Francke, 84). This shows that abortion is not the cure for a rape victim.

Overall, I completely disagree with the act of abortion. Just because it is a medical procedure does not justify the act of killing a baby inside the womb. Many say that the baby is not alive during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, a baby’s heart starts beating after the twenty-first day of conception (http://www.abortionfacts.com/abortion/q_facts.asp). The baby is alive if it has a heartbeat. Even with rape victims, the act of abortion is not justifiable. It does not cure the victim of the sexual assault itself, and it will continue their pain after killing another life for an unavoidable mistake.
